Combating Anti-Semitism & Hate

The JCRC is committed to combating anti-Semitism and hate in our society. The following are some examples of the efforts undertaken in the Peninsula Region.

“NOT IN OUR TOWN” I & II

The JCRC Peninsula Region, together with the Palo Alto Police Department, the NAACP, and the FBI sponsored two community anti-hate workshops: NOT IN OUR TOWN (I and II). The purpose of these initiatives was to raise consciousness of hate crimes and to build a spirit of community cooperation. Using a community dialogue format, these workshops addressed what individuals and groups can do to combat hate in our communities and how to responded if one becomes a victim of a hate crime.

Holocaust Commemoration: Yom Ha’Shoah

"Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it"

The JCRC, together with the broader Jewish community, host annual regional commemoration events. The 2002 Yom Ha’Shoah Commemoration served both the North and South Peninsula communities, with services being held on Erev Yom Ha’Shoah at Temple Beth Jacob, located in Redwood City. The program included a procession of survivors, a candlelighting ceremony, music and song provided by the youth of our community, and two guest speakers: Knud Dyby and Michael Thaler.
