2006 – San Francisco’s Summer of Hate

After the outbreak of the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah on July 12, a series of anti-Israel protests were organized in San Francisco. The principle organizers of these rallies included International A.N.S.W.E.R. (Act Now to Stop War and End Racism), Al Awda (Palestine Right to Return Coalition). Other groups participating in these rallies included the National Association of Arab Americans, the Muslim American Society Freedom Foundation and “Jews for a Free Palestine.”

In the course of these rallies, explicit anti-Semitism was expressed by participants who attended, including Nazi salutes (see right).

To date, none of the rallies’ organizers have condemned the pro-violence and anti-Semitic expressions that took place at their rallies.

At the same time, we distance ourselves from the few individuals who brought hateful signs to pro-Israel rallies that we helped promote. Such signs are disgraceful and do not reflect the views of JCRC. Please see our full statement on Hate Speech here.

“Anti-war” Demonstrators Supporting Terrorism and Hate

This video documents a number of anti-Israel rallies that took place during the summer. Here is a brief description of the rallies:

On July 23, a small group of anti-Israel protesters demonstrated at the “Stand With Israel Rally,” organized by the local Jewish community at Justin Herman Plaza in San Francisco. The counter-proteters chanted in Arabic “Falastin beladna; wel Yahud kelabna!” (“Palestine is our country; and the Jews are our dogs!”), made Nazi salutes toward the pro-Israel rally, and shouted their support for Hezbollah and Hamas.
On July 13, Al Awda organized a rally outside the Israeli Consulate in San Francisco (see above) and joined by International A.N.S.W.E.R. and “Jews for a Free Palestine” among others. Chanting at this rally included overt anti-Semitism (“The Jews are our dogs”, in Arabic), overt support for Hamas and Hezbollah, and calls for Israel’s destruction (“From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free!”)

At an anti-Israel Rally in San Francisco on Saturday, August 12, 2006, a group chants in Arabic their support for Hezbollah and violence against Jews in general, and Israelis.
